Before 1990 a sports park occupied this land. Now stand the houses of Park Haagseweg. This small Amsterdam neighbourhood in Nieuw-West is a testament to urban transformation. It sits between Sloterweg and Johan Huizingalaan. The former ACTA building and the old Police Academy are also part of its story.

Park Haagseweg boasts a unique history. In 1990 and 1991 380 homes were built. The architectural firm Mecanoo designed the neighbourhood. The streets are named after 20th-century jazz musicians. Louis Armstrongstraat is the main street.

A fascinating detail is the former police school. Located on Sloterweg 700 it was demolished by 2014. The site Route 1066 became two islands. They now have 39 plots for self-build homes. Ella Fitzgeraldstraat and Sarah Vaughanstraat are there. These street names reflect a decision to name more roads after women. A bridge connects Park Haagseweg to cycle paths.

Finding parking might be a challenge. But Park Haagseweg has its own charm. Its community is unique. The jazz-inspired street names add character. The location is fantastic.
