Built between 1849 and 1851 Fort Nieuwersluis stands proudly. Its strategic location between the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal and the Vecht River was crucial. It protected the damsluis a vital structure preventing the Zuiderzee and Lek waters from merging during inundations. The fort also safeguarded the lock. This allowed Vecht water to be directed to the Amstel. It then flooded Amsterdam’s defenses if needed. Think of it a water-based fortress.

Fort Nieuwersluis wasn’t always this imposing structure. A small post existed near the village in 1629. It was named after the lock in the Nieuwe Wetering. More fortifications were added in 1673. By 1849-1851 the southwestern part of the existing fortification was incorporated into the current fort. A tower was added.

Originally meant to connect to the Amsterdam defense line along the New Dutch Waterline Fort Nieuwersluis played a significant role. However when this line shifted the fort became a crucial outpost. It defended the Rhine railway the Vecht River and its embankments. It was a critical position in the larger defensive strategy.

In 1951 a firing range was likely built. This was probably for the Protection of the Population and/or National Reserve. Similar ranges were constructed at other forts in the area. By 1964 the lower half of the bombproof barracks housed a command post. This was for the Protection of the Population.

Today the original polder landscape surrounding Fort Nieuwersluis remains largely untouched. The Merwede Canal widened in the 1930s. It became the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal in 1939. Fort Nieuwersluis itself is a Rijksmonument and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It stands as a testament to Dutch ingenuity and military strategy. It is a peaceful nature reserve now but its history is rich and complex. The fort’s past offers a glimpse into the Netherlands’ defensive capabilities. Its story unfolds in the very stones you see before you.
