Imagine standing here centuries ago. What would this landscape look like? The Kerk aan Zee has stood here in Muiderberg since the 15th century. It has witnessed much.

The Kerk aan Zee began as a Roman Catholic church. It replaced an earlier chapel. That chapel honored Count Floris V. He was murdered nearby.

Around 1566, the Beeldenstorm swept through. This wave of iconoclasm damaged the Kerk aan Zee. It was rebuilt for Protestant worship.

Fire has tested the Kerk aan Zee more than once. The first major fire struck in 1630. Over fifty years passed before repairs in 1686. The spire vanished sometime in the 18th century.

Another fire ravaged the Kerk aan Zee on February 18, 1934. Much of the interior was lost. But the tower remained standing. Architect Nicolaas Doornberg designed the new top of the tower. A restoration of the tower occurred in 1978.

Today the Kerk aan Zee is a Rijksmonument. This means it is a nationally recognized building. It has historical significance.

But the Kerk aan Zee is more than just a historical artifact. It is a living church. Concerts often fill the Kerk aan Zee. The “Concert aan Zee” series is popular. Art exhibitions also take place here. Linde Gadellaa’s exhibit, “Het wonder waar ik op wachtte,” has been shown.

The Kerk aan Zee also hosts community events. “Coffee to stay” meets at the Ontmoetingscentrum. This is every first Friday of the month. The Protestant church plays a vital role in Muiden and Muiderberg. They organize many events together. You can find their yearly program online.

So, the Kerk aan Zee is a place of worship. It is a concert hall. It is an art gallery. It is a community hub. It is a landmark that connects the past with the present. Take a moment to appreciate the Kerk aan Zee. It is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a story etched in time.
