Hidden within Amsterdam, the Geuzenbos whispers tales of nature’s resilience. The Geuzenbos is a surprising haven of biodiversity, nestled between Halfweg and the bustling Westelijk Havengebied. Originally intended as a production forest in 1991, thanks to the initiative of city council member Roel van Duijn, the Geuzenbos has evolved into something far wilder and more precious. The area designated for production, with its single-species plots, offered limited ecological value. However, the untouched sections flourished, transforming into a vibrant tapestry of diverse plant and animal life. This sanctuary now sprawls across 60 hectares, bisected by the Wethouder van Essenweg. The Geuzenbos is part of the ‘Hoofdgroenstructuur’ and the ‘Ecologische structuur’, vital green corridors within the city’s urban plan. It also serves as a crucial link in the Amstelland-Spaarnwoude ecological zone, the so-called ‘Groene AS’. This area boasts a rich history, echoing Amsterdam’s own transformation. Before becoming a verdant oasis, this land served as a dumping ground for silt from the nearby Centrale Suiker Maatschappij (CSM) sugar beet factory. The resulting variations in soil composition, from clay to calcium-rich sand, have contributed to the diverse flora and fauna found within the Geuzenbos today. Look closely, and you might spot remnants of the area’s past. A replica of a 17th-century banpaal, immortalized in an etching by Rembrandt, stands as a testament to the area’s historical significance. This marker, originally located on the Spaarndammerdijk, has been moved slightly due to shifts in the dike’s position. Today, the Geuzenbos thrives under the watchful eye of the ‘Stichting Free Nature’. Konik horses and Scottish Highlanders graze freely, shaping the landscape and maintaining the ecological balance. Their presence, along with the varied habitats of marsh, grassland, and willow and ash-oak forests, supports an incredible array of species. Birdsong fills the air, from the soaring buzzard and hawk to the melodic nightingale and the vibrant green woodpecker. Hidden among the reeds, you might glimpse a bluethroat, a bearded reedling, or even the elusive bittern. Foxes, pine martens, and hedgehogs roam the undergrowth, while frogs, snakes, and salamanders thrive in the damp areas. Seventeen strategically placed pools of varying depths offer a haven for amphibians, including the rare natterjack toad. The Geuzenbos is a testament to the power of nature to reclaim and rejuvenate even in the heart of a bustling city.
