Imagine stepping back in time. It is a journey through Waterland’s history, preserved within these walls. This is the Waterlands Archief. Founded in 1979, it started as Streekarchief Waterland. Municipalities in the region agreed to have their historical archives managed here. In 2003, the archives moved and the name changed to Waterlands Archief.

The Waterlands Archief safeguards the history of Waterland. It holds documents from municipalities such as Beemster, Edam-Volendam, and Landsmeer. Purmerend, Waterland, and Wormerland are also represented. Archives from water boards, notaries, and private institutions are preserved here too. Churches, companies, associations, families, and individuals all have their stories kept safe.

What stories do these documents tell? The Waterlands Archief holds documents about measures against Jews. Documents on war damage are also here. Information on Jewish and German students is available. These records paint a vivid picture of the region’s past.

Did you know the Waterlands Archief offers a glimpse into the area’s rich heritage? It preserves archives of past and current civic administrations. Agencies in Edam-Volendam, Landsmeer, and Purmerend are included. Waterland and Wormerland are part of it too. The waterboard Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier’s records are here. Notaries, churches, businesses, and families have their records stored safely here. The Waterlands Archief has a large collection of images.
