Hidden along the tranquil Ringvaart canal, the Akermolen whispers tales of a bygone era. This isn’t the typical windmill you picture adorned with sails against the Dutch sky. The Akermolen stands as a proud, albeit truncated, monument to Amsterdam’s industrious past. The Akermolen began its life in 1874, not here, but “elsewhere.” Its original location remains a bit of a mystery, a puzzle that local historians are still piecing together. What we do know is that the Akermolen was relocated here to the Middelveldsche Akerpolder, a former peat meadow area. This area, situated between the Osdorperweg and the Haarlemmermeer, needed a powerful force to manage the water levels. The Akermolen, with its impressive 28-meter wingspan, was that force. It was a giant among polder windmills, a testament to Dutch engineering. Look closely at the remaining structure. You can still see two plaques embedded in the stone. These commemorate the mill’s initial construction and a later modification where the scoop wheel was replaced by a more efficient Archimedes’ screw. The Akermolen wasn’t just about draining the polder. It could also reverse its operation, flooding the area in times of need. This unique feature made it a strategic asset in the Defense Line of Amsterdam, a precursor to the Stelling van Amsterdam. By 1920, technology marched forward, and a new electric pumping station was built nearby. The Akermolen’s wings were removed in 1921, leaving behind the stoic stump we see today. The structure was then repurposed as a residence for the polder master. In the 1990s, as the new neighborhood of De Aker sprang up around it, the Akermolen faced demolition. Thanks to the efforts of preservationists, the city designated it a municipal monument. Stadsherstel Amsterdam then stepped in, restoring the mill stump to its 1920s appearance. Today, the Akermolen has found new life. It now houses a charming teahouse where people with intellectual disabilities work, contributing to the vibrant community. This is more than just a place to enjoy a cup of tea. It’s a place that embraces history, community, and the enduring spirit of Amsterdam.
