Clunk. The sound of a vintage tram’s doors closing echoes through time. Welcome to the NZH vervoer museum. This isn’t just any museum. It’s a living testament to the history of public transport in the Netherlands. Established in 1981 the NZH vervoer museum initially occupied the NZH garage in Haarlem. This was a fitting location given the museum’s focus on the Noord Zuid Hollandse Vervoer Maatschappij or NZH. It wasn’t always here though. Due to housing development the museum moved in 2015 to its current home. This charming location houses a remarkable collection.

The NZH vervoer museum boasts a captivating array of trams and buses. Four trams stand proudly. The oldest among them is a Metallurgique BY2 dating back to 1896. Imagine riding in that! Then there’s the iconic “Blue Tram” A327. Built in 1913 this beauty served Haarlem until 1948. It then continued its journey in Leiden until 1960. Miraculously it avoided the scrap heap thanks to the NVBS historical society. Today it is a working museum tram. The NZH vervoer museum also exhibits eleven buses many of which are still operational. These are regularly used for public rides a unique experience offered by few museums. These buses showcase the evolution of public transport. You can see everything from a small 1923 GTW eight-seater bus to a modern marvel.

One particular gem is a 1972 DAF regional bus. This bus holds special significance as the only surviving example of its kind from its era. The NZH vervoer museum also houses a fascinating workshop. Here skilled volunteers are painstakingly restoring a 1904 tram motorcar. This remarkable restoration project will capture the hearts of visitors. This is a true labor of love and a demonstration of the museum’s commitment to preserving its history. Their dedication is inspiring.

The museum isn’t just about old vehicles though. There’s also a permanent exhibition. It complements the collection of vehicles beautifully. It tells the larger story. It’s a must see experience for anyone interested in the history of public transport. The NZH vervoer museum is more than a collection. It is a living archive celebrating the people and technology that shaped public transit. It keeps the stories of the past alive for everyone to enjoy. So please explore the vehicles. Engage with the permanent exhibition. And remember that the NZH vervoer museum is here. It’s here to preserve and share the fascinating story of this vital part of Dutch history.
