“Peace Love Faith and Hope” These words etched in stone greet you at Luthers Hofje. This isn’t just any Amsterdam courtyard. It’s a living testament to faith community and resilience.
Luthers Hofje stands proudly on Staringplein in Oud-West. It’s more than just a pretty building. It’s a continuation of two older almshouses the Konijnenhofje and the Zwaardvegershofje both located in the Jordaan. These earlier hofjes housed elderly women. The Lutherhof carries on this tradition of providing affordable housing. It’s the oldest Lutheran charitable institution in Amsterdam.
Built in 1909 it’s a striking building. Architect D. Van Oort Hzn. designed it differently from typical Dutch hofjes. He drew inspiration from Italian and German Renaissance architecture. Notice the arcades the columns and the stained glass. It feels almost monastic more like a cloister than a traditional hofje. The building’s imposing size and unique design make it a landmark on Staringplein.
The first stone was laid in 1907 by Augusta Ernestine Sillem. The official opening was a grand celebration in the garden in 1909. The hofje celebrated its centenary in 2009. In 2000 it was added to the national monument register.
Renovations in 1982 modernized the sanitation. Each unit received its own bathroom. Some units were combined to create larger apartments. The old mortuary was transformed into a laundry room. After the renovations younger residents including medical students were accepted to assist elderly residents. Men were also eventually welcomed. Further modernization in the early 2000s added new apartments in the spacious attic. Today Luthers Hofje is a sought-after residence with a long waiting list. Priority is still given to Lutherans and older residents.
The legacy of Luthers Hofje continues. It offers a sheltered community and a peaceful place to live. Its history is etched in stone in the very heart of Amsterdam.
