Remembering “the pearl of Bijlmer.” That’s what this sculpture of Steven van Dorpel is all about. Here in Nelson Mandelapark stands a tribute to a life cut short. It’s a bronze statue on a corten steel base.

Steven van Dorpel was more than just a footballer. He was a symbol of hope for many. Born on December 13 1965 he tragically died on June 7 1989. The sculpture immortalizes him with a ball at his feet.

Nelson Carrilho created this artwork. He received the commission in 1990 from SV Bijlmer. This was Steven’s first football club. The community collected money through the Vrienden van Steve. Carrilho usually creates more abstract art. But this time he needed to make a lifelike depiction. He collaborated closely with Van Dorpel’s family. His mother confirmed that the statue resembled her son.

Bobby Haarms unveiled the Steven van Dorpel Sculpture on May 28 1992. Haarms was the assistant coach at AFC Ajax. Originally, it stood near the police station on Flierbosdreef. In 2010, it was moved to its current location in Nelson Mandelapark.

Look closely at the base. You will see a plaque. It reads: “Steven van Dorpel, 13 December 1965 – 7 June 1989. In memory of ‘the pearl of the Bijlmer’ who flew away with other loved ones never to return. May grace, peace and love be yours in full glory. Amsterdam, 28 May 1992.”

Van Dorpel’s story is heartbreaking. He was a rising star at FC Volendam. He was about to sign with Roda JC. He was also planning to meet his father in Suriname for the first time since he was three. He was to play benefit matches with the Kleurrijk Elftal.

The SLM disaster changed everything. The plane crashed near Paramaribo. Only eleven of 187 people survived. Fifteen players from the Kleurrijk Elftal died. A monument in Amsterdam-Oost also commemorates the tragedy.

Carrilho is a well-known bronze artist. He often makes socially conscious art. Other works include Mama Baranka in the Vondelpark and Dragers van Verre in the Westerpark.

Notice how Steven seems to be watching the young footballers in the park. He remains forever young with a ball at his foot. The Steven van Dorpel Sculpture reminds us of talent lost. It also honors a lasting legacy. It’s a place for reflection in this vibrant park.
