Built in 1772 De Zonnewijzer stands proudly on Herengracht 182. This grand building initially called De Sonnewijser is a national monument. It boasts a substantial area of 3500 square meters. Commissioned by Jan Arnoud van Brienen son of Willem van Brienen De Zonnewijzer was designed by Belgian architect Ludwig Friedrich Druck.

For almost 250 years De Zonnewijzer has served its purpose. This has left its mark. The visible wear and tear were readily apparent when Harvest Vastgoed and Millten acquired it in 2013. Millten spearheaded the renovation. They embraced sustainability. Working closely with the Bureau Monumenten en Archeologie Millten extensively renovated the building. This ensured its future viability as a high-quality office space.

The building owner envisioned restoring De Zonnewijzer’s original luxury. A modern luxury office building needed aesthetic appeal and environmental responsibility. These were key renovation principles. The building’s historical value and charm were also crucial during the large-scale renovation.

Since summer 2019 De Zonnewijzer has housed the Karl Lagerfeld fashion brand’s headquarters. In 2013 Amstelius Green Building Group conducted a technical due diligence on behalf of the building owner. Following the acquisition Amstelius managed the property financially and technically. The office building was sold in 2019. De Zonnewijzer’s history is rich in stories of changing owners and renovations reflecting Amsterdam’s evolution over centuries. The building’s transformation from a grand private residence to a modern office space showcases its resilience and enduring appeal. This remarkable building continues to hold its place in the heart of Amsterdam. Its story is a testament to its enduring strength and architectural significance.
