Remarkable isn’t it? Standing before Slot Assumburg you are witnessing centuries of history. This magnificent castle in Heemskerk isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to powerful families and changing times.

Originally built around 1486 by Nicolaas van Assendelft there was a house here even earlier. A 13th-century house stood on this very spot. It was later replaced by the castle we see today. The Van Assendelft family shaped its destiny. They lived here for generations. Their mark is evident in the castle’s design and its ongoing story.

The castle has four wings. These surround a beautiful courtyard. A symmetrical baroque garden complements the architecture. This wasn’t always the case. The garden was recreated in 2011. It’s a faithful recreation of a 1729 copper engraving. Imagine the original gardeners meticulously placing each plant. The symmetry is simply stunning.

Ownership changed hands numerous times. After the Van Assendelfts. The Van Renesse family briefly owned it. Then merchant Johannes Wuytiers acquired it. After that Amsterdam banker Jean Deutz and his wife Maria Boreel modernized it. They added the exquisite gardens. They also created a park that once featured a deer park. The Deutz family inhabited Slot Assumburg until 1867.

The castle fell into disrepair. In 1911 its owners donated it. They donated it including the moat driveway and orangery. They gave it to the Minister of the Interior. The condition was simple. Slot Assumburg was to be preserved. A youth hostel opened in 1933. This ensured the castle’s survival.

Today the oldest parts remain. Two square towers and part of the ring wall are from the 15th century. Extensive renovations occurred later. These renovations were in the 17th and 18th centuries. Because of these changes. We know less about the earliest building phases.

Slot Assumburg has been owned by Monumentenbezit since 2016. Restoration continues. Visitors today can experience this remarkable place. You can stay overnight. Alternatively you can simply stroll through its beautiful gardens. Slot Assumburg stands tall. It stands as a symbol of perseverance and Dutch heritage. Its story continues to unfold.
