The Volendam Museum opened in 1977. But the idea started long before. In 1967 the association Old Volendam wanted a museum. Plans became real in 1975. The old sister monastery’s upper floor became available. A door-to-door action raised 18000 guilders. The Volendam Museum was in the old sister monastery until 1986. Then it moved due to the arrival of the Gouwzee nursing home. The municipality and province supported the current location on the dike.
Now, the Volendam Museum stands proudly on the dike near the harbor. You can explore traditional costumes and historic interiors. Five historically furnished rooms recreate Botterstraat. One room is a shop. The living rooms show the period between 1820 and 1920. The Volendam Museum also features jewelry, paintings, drawings and sculptures. Photographs, postcards, fishing objects and folk art are on display too. The Volendam Museum has an annually changing exhibition.
One unmissable highlight is the Cigar Band House. A retired monk created this space between 1947 and 1996. He stuck 11 million cigar bands in a mosaic on the wall. The image was from the Dutch province weapons. Flevoland was added in 2013 because it did not exist before.
