Strolling through this vibrant scene, you might ask yourself: what stories does Waterlooplein Market hold? Waterlooplein Market is Amsterdam’s oldest flea market. It is a bustling hub with about 300 stalls. It’s open six days a week. This makes it one of the friendliest spots in the heart of Amsterdam.

Waterlooplein’s history isn’t ancient by Amsterdam standards. Yet, it sits in a neighborhood with medieval roots. The square got its name from the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Waterlooplein Market became a marketplace in 1882. The city decided Jewish merchants should move their stalls here. These merchants were from Jodenbreestraat and Sint Antoniebreestraat. By 1893, Waterlooplein Market was a daily market. It was closed on Saturdays for the Jewish Sabbath.

During World War II, the Jewish quarter was emptied. Nazis rounded up residents and sent them to concentration camps. By 1941, Waterlooplein Market disappeared. After the war, the Jewish quarter remained deserted. Waterlooplein Market transformed into a flea market.

In the 1960s and 70s, Waterlooplein Market was famous. Hippies, flower power, and wealthy American tourists flocked here. It was often compared to Le Marché aux Puces. After the war, Amsterdam faced scarcity. The flea market provided a solution. Excess military stocks were sold cheaply.

However, in 1977, Waterlooplein Market had to move. This was for the construction of the town hall. It relocated to Rapenburgerstraat. There was much emotion. A decision was made that if the Town Hall.

Since October 1, 1988, the market returned. It went back to its old spot. Today, Waterlooplein Market offers a diverse range of goods. You can find vintage cameras, used books, jewelry, and the latest fashions. Each stall is unique. Who knows what treasures you might uncover? Perhaps an unknown Rembrandt. Maybe an autographed copy of Hemingway. Or even a guitar from John Lennon.

Food trucks add to the experience. They offer fries, Italian, Lebanese, and Greek snacks. Waterlooplein Market is easily accessible. It is a stop on Amsterdam Metro lines 51, 53, and 54. Tram line 14 and the Museumboot water taxi also stop here.

Johnny Kraaykamp and Rijk de Gooyer had a hit song in 1969. It was called “Oh Waterlooplein”. It described the flea market. Waterlooplein Market is more than just a place to shop. It’s a place where history, culture, and community come together.

So, take your time. Wander through the stalls. Soak in the atmosphere. You might just find a hidden gem. You’ll definitely find a piece of Amsterdam’s vibrant history at Waterlooplein Market.
