Hidden in plain sight along the Amstel River, Weesperzijde whispers tales of Amsterdam’s vibrant past. Weesperzijde wasn’t always the tranquil, residential neighborhood you see today. Its name, meaning “Weesp Side,” reveals its origin as the main road leading out of Amsterdam towards the town of Weesp. Imagine horse-drawn carriages clattering along this route in the 17th century, bound for neighboring towns. The area transformed into a hub for leisure and entertainment. Taverns lined the riverbanks, offering moorings for boats. These taverns eventually gave way to the rowing clubs Poseidon and De Hoop, echoes of a bygone era of leisurely pursuits. Weesperzijde’s transformation didn’t stop there. In the 19th and 20th centuries, grand houses began to grace the waterfront, attracting Amsterdam’s upper class. These architectural gems, designed by prominent architects like Dolf van Gendt, still stand as testaments to the area’s prosperous past. One such gem is the monumental Grand Café De Ysbreeker at number 23. This café, whose name translates to “The Ice Breaker,” holds a unique piece of Weesperzijde’s history. Before modern technology, a barge pulled by horses would break up the ice on the Amstel during winter. This ensured a fresh water supply and kept the river navigable. This ice-breaking barge would be moored in the summer months, right across from where the café now stands. Today, Weesperzijde continues to evolve. While the horse-drawn carriages and ice-breaking barges are gone, a new form of transportation dominates the scene: bicycles. Weesperzijde has become a key artery for cyclists, connecting the modern business district near Amstel Station to the heart of Amsterdam. And amidst this modern bustle, the echoes of the past still linger, whispering stories of taverns, grand houses, and a river that once froze over in winter.
