Craving an escape from Amsterdam’s urban hustle? The W.H. Vliegenbos beckons. It is Amsterdam’s oldest city forest. Imagine workers seeking solace here on Sundays.
The W.H. Vliegenbos arose from the vision of Willem H. Vliegen. He was a social-democratic council member. Vliegen championed a green space close to the city. His goal was to provide respite for laborers and citizens. Vliegen wanted them to escape the urban environment. The northern part of Nieuwendammerham became the location. Amsterdam started the forest’s creation between 1912 and 1918. A.W. Bos and M.Ph.J.H. Klijnen designed it.
Initially called ‘IJ-bosch’, locals soon named it Vliegenbos. After Willem Vliegen’s death in 1950, it officially became W.H. Vliegenbos. This acknowledges his pivotal role.
Today the W.H. Vliegenbos stands as a testament to nature’s resilience. It also shows community spirit. Most trees date back to after World War II. Fuel shortages led to extensive logging. Yet, the forest regenerated vigorously. It sprouted from the stumps of felled trees. The forest is now a haven for diverse flora and fauna.
Interestingly, the W.H. Vliegenbos faced threats. In 1984, the forest became a buffer zone. This was between a chemical factory and residential areas. The lush greenery was meant to absorb pollution. This highlights the forest’s adaptability.
Adding a touch of Parisian flair, look for the cast-iron arches at the entrance. These ornate arches originated from Paris’s old market halls. Artist Peter Diem donated them. They now frame the forest’s entrance.
Also, bridge 362 known as Zosenerdambrug, offers entry from Nieuwendammerkade. This small wooden bridge adds to the forest’s charm. Piet Kramer may have designed it.
Simon Vinkenoog even found inspiration here. He wrote his poem ‘De vlammende boom’ in 1993. His words capture the forest’s serene beauty.
The W.H. Vliegenbos is more than just trees. It symbolizes Amsterdam’s commitment to green spaces. It has Volkstuinen, Camping Vliegenbos, a sport terrain and Scouting Wartburg. It is a green lung within the city.
As you wander through W.H. Vliegenbos, consider its history. Think about Willem Vliegen’s dream. Remember the forest’s role as a buffer. Appreciate its resilience and beauty. The W.H. Vliegenbos provides peace and fresh air.
