Seven decades after its inception the Haveneiland stands proudly. It is the largest of IJburg’s islands. Its name reflects the inner harbor. This harbor connects to the IJmeer via a lock.

Haveneiland boasts a dense residential area. Approximately 70 homes occupy each hectare. Most buildings are three or four stories tall. Some reach twelve stories. The street layout is a grid pattern. This pattern resembles many American cities. Street names honor photographers and filmmakers. A consortium of architects designed the detailed urban plan. This consortium included De Architekten Cie Claus & Kaan Architecten and Schaap & Stigter.

The island is divided into two parts. Haveneiland-West and Haveneiland-Oost are separated by water. They are also separated by lock 119 near the harbor. Haveneiland-West connects to Steigereiland via bridge 2002. Small bridges over the Groene Tunnel connect it to Grote Rieteiland. This part of Haveneiland has been inhabited since 2005.

Haveneiland-Oost includes a marina and a city park. This park is called the Theo van Goghpark. Bridge 2048 connects it to Rieteiland-Oost. The Pampuslaan connects it to Centrumeiland via bridge 2030. Centrumeiland links to IJburg’s eastern access. This part of Haveneiland has been inhabited since 2008.

A common feature is the high ground floor. People live near the street. This design avoids standard solutions with front gardens and kitchen windows facing the street. Vertical segmentation creates a unified townscape. Underground parking keeps inner areas car-free. This creates space for gardens rooftop terraces and public areas. Where water cuts through the blocks there are houses gardens and moorings.

Haveneiland-West features streets that access garages. These streets resemble English ‘mews’. These were back streets designed for coach houses. Now they often feature charming workshops and shops. The choice of an English term for something common in Amsterdam is unclear.

Despite plans since 2000 Haveneiland has a limited supply of adaptable homes. These are crucial for residents throughout their lives. The Haveneiland stands as a testament to innovative urban planning and design. Its blend of modern architecture and community spaces creates a unique environment. A truly captivating island in Amsterdam’s vibrant tapestry.
