Imagine stumbling upon what locals affectionately call a grand plane crash. That’s one nickname for the Groot Landschap Sculpture. It is an artwork by Wessel Couzijn. This striking sculpture resides in Sloterpark.

The Groot Landschap Sculpture was created in 1974. Couzijn’s work stands atop a specially constructed hill. This hill is an integral part of the artwork itself.

Interestingly, Couzijn also designed the sculpture for Unilever in Rotterdam. It is called Belichaamde Eenheid. He was a versatile artist. He worked with painting, drawing and sculpture.

However, the Groot Landschap Sculpture’s story hasn’t always been smooth. By 1996, it was already showing severe wear. The rusty steel was riddled with holes. Graffiti marred its surface. There were concerns about its safety for park visitors.

At one point, there was even talk of scrapping it. The sharp edges posed a risk to children. The local council considered sending it to the smelter.

Fortunately, that didn’t happen. In 2005, concerns were voiced about its deteriorating condition. It highlighted the danger to children. It also pointed to the decline of an important artwork.

Geert Lebbing advocated for its repair. He suggested a practical approach. He wanted to focus on what was technically and financially feasible.

In 2006, restoration work finally took place. Holes were welded shut. The welders used Couzijn’s signature scalloped seams. Eight-meter pipes were installed underneath to prevent further warping. Graffiti was removed. The sculpture received a wax coating to ease future cleaning.

The hill was also replenished. It was sown with grass seed. A permanent staircase replaced a temporary construction staircase. This allowed closer inspection of the restored Groot Landschap Sculpture.

The Groot Landschap Sculpture’s troubles might not be over. There are concerns that it will face accelerated decay. People might treat it like a plaything. But for now, it stands as a testament to Couzijn’s vision.

Wessel Couzijn overcame adversity in his life. As a child, he was affected by infantile paralysis. This limited the use of one arm. Despite this, he pursued his artistic passions. He initially studied painting. He then switched to sculpture.

The Groot Landschap Sculpture is a prime example of Dutch Land Art. It merges art and environment. Its imposing size and abstract form evoke different reactions. Some see a plane crash. Others find a deeper meaning in its shapes.

Nearby stands Gerard Bruning’s Vleugelvormen. Its form resembles the tail of a crashed plane. Did Bruning intend to respond to the sculpture’s nickname?

Take a moment to appreciate the Groot Landschap Sculpture. Think about its history and the artist’s vision. Consider the efforts to preserve this unique piece of art. It reflects the beauty that can arise from decay. It embodies the resilience of art in the face of time.
