The imposing structure before you is De Nederlandsche Bank. Its history is rich and complex. Established on March 25 1814 by King William I De Nederlandsche Bank initially occupied 17th-century houses on Oude Turfmarkt.

In the 1860s a purpose-built head office designed by architect Willem Anthonie Froger replaced these older buildings. This building served De Nederlandsche Bank until 1968. It then became the home of the Allard Pierson Museum a testament to Amsterdam’s evolving cityscape.

De Nederlandsche Bank’s new headquarters on Frederiksplein opened in May 1968. Queen Juliana herself inaugurated the building. Architect Marius Duintjer’s design was striking a low square base supporting a tall rectangular office tower. This tower stood 75 meters tall a prominent feature on the Amsterdam skyline.

But De Nederlandsche Bank’s story doesn’t end there. In the late 1980s an oval tower was added to accommodate the bank’s growth. Architects Jelle Abma and Marc a Campo designed this extension. It was completed in 1989. However this addition was short-lived.

During a comprehensive renovation in the early 2020s the oval tower was demolished. The building’s exterior has been restored to its original 1961 design. The square base and rectangular tower are once again the dominant features of De Nederlandsche Bank. The renovated De Nederlandsche Bank now incorporates public spaces. An auditorium exhibition space and a modern library welcome visitors.

These spaces offer a chance to learn about De Nederlandsche Bank’s core activities. Exhibitions interactive games seminars and debates all contribute to a dynamic public experience. The once-private courtyard is now a public garden. Even a new treasure room opens in March 2025 showcasing the bank’s collection of money and art. De Nederlandsche Bank’s transformation from a secure fortress to an accessible public space demonstrates its commitment to transparency and engagement with the city.
