Gazing upon a combination of telescope and microscope. That’s the Kijker Installation. This artwork by Barbara Kletter invites us to observe the universe and ourselves.

The Kijker stands proudly near the Hugo de Vrieslaan in Amsterdam-Oost. It is situated in the molenwetering. This waterway runs parallel to the street. The street is named after the biologist Hugo de Vries.

Barbara Kletter created the Kijker in 1993. The artwork is made of galvanized metal and aluminum. It reaches a height of 750 cm and a width of 10 meters. It includes a small bridge. This bridge is an integral part of the installation.

Kletter’s assignment was to create a piece related to science. The area’s streets and squares bear scientists’ names. She combined a telescope and a microscope in her concept.

Visitors standing beneath the Kijker become observers of the cosmos. Simultaneously, they find themselves under a microscope. This dual perspective is part of Kletter’s vision.

The entire structure sits on a rotating disk. The disk has a diameter of 460 cm. You can operate it with your foot from the bridge. This allows you to change the Kijker’s position constantly. The position changes due to the Earth’s movement and your actions. The Kijker Installation offers a unique artistic experience. It blends art, science, and interaction.

Amsterdam itself is a city of innovation. It began as a small fishing village in the 13th century. The city was built on poles to combat its location below sea level. Amsterdam officially became the capital of the Netherlands in 1983.

The Kijker Installation reflects Amsterdam’s spirit. The city values tolerance and progress. It embraces art and science. The Kijker encourages visitors to contemplate their place in the universe. It also prompts reflection on the world around them.

Take a moment to turn the wheel. Consider the vastness of space. Think about the intricacies of microscopic life. The Kijker Installation is more than just a sculpture. It is an invitation to explore and understand. It embodies Amsterdam’s spirit of curiosity and discovery. It is a testament to the power of art and science combined.
