Before the majestic Palace on Dam Square stood the Raadhuis. This was Amsterdam’s City Hall until 1808. Its story is woven into the very fabric of this city.

The Raadhuis wasn’t always the grand structure we imagine today. It began modestly in the fourteenth century. Think of a simple two-story building with a gabled roof. It served as the seat of Amsterdam’s government. This humble building grew with the city. It expanded over the centuries. It underwent renovations after devastating fires.

By the end of the sixteenth century Amsterdam was booming. The old Raadhuis couldn’t handle the increasing number of officials. The space was cramped. It was also falling apart. Rats even infested the archives. The Raadhuis was simply inadequate.

Then came the catastrophic fire of 1652. The old Raadhuis burned to the ground. This event marked a turning point. It accelerated plans for a new and larger city hall. Brave Amsterdammers risked their lives to save valuable documents and the city’s money.

The replacement of the old Raadhuis is now the Palace on Dam Square. It stands as a testament to Amsterdam’s growth. It symbolizes the city’s ambition and wealth. However the name Raadhuisstraat still reminds us of its predecessor. The Raadhuis’s legacy lives on. It is a cornerstone in the history of Amsterdam. It shaped this vibrant city into what it is today.
