Picture a tranquil oasis nestled in Amsterdam East. This is Darwinplantsoen a long slender park designed by Hans Warnau. It opened in 1963. But its story begins much earlier.

In the 1950s Amsterdam was rebuilding after the war. New housing was needed. The Watergraafsmeer district was expanding. Plans included Darwinplantsoen. This area was once farmland. Locals remember cows grazing near the future homes.

The park’s design is clever. Warnau created distinct sections for different age groups. There’s a rose garden for older people. A playing field was meant for general use. Another section held a perennial garden with neatly trimmed yew hedges. A paved area with a sandbox and a small pond offered shade and fun for young children.

Sadly some elements never materialized. A planned children’s pool and sandbox were likely shelved due to post-war budget constraints. Yet the core design remained intact. The rose and perennial gardens were built level with the nearby houses. This connected the homes with nature and highlighted the difference between quiet spaces and those for active play.

A double row of trees screens the park from the busy Gooiseweg. It also subtly links Frankendael Park and the Nieuwe Ooster cemetery. Warnau favored planting styles reminiscent of traditional Dutch farms. He often used shrubs and small ornamental trees amongst the perennials. This created a natural look.

The park has faced changes. In 2017 extensive renovations improved drainage. Swales and small hills were added. The diverse plantings give it a playful feel. One unexpected detail a bronze sculpture called ‘Horse and Rider’ by Floyd DeWitt stood here from 1978 to 1985. It was unfortunately stolen. A similar sculpture by the same artist exists in Amsterdam’s Gijsbrecht van Aemstelpark.

Darwinplantsoen continues to evolve. Today it’s a beloved spot for relaxation and recreation. A true hidden gem in the heart of Amsterdam. A testament to smart post-war urban planning. It beautifully blends community needs with thoughtful landscaping. A walk through Darwinplantsoen is a journey through time. It reveals a story of adaptation resilience and the enduring beauty of nature within the city.
