Amidst the waters of the IJmeer, a new story unfolds. Buiteneiland, the final piece of Amsterdam’s IJburg puzzle, is slowly emerging from the waves. Unlike its residential neighbours, Buiteneiland promises a different kind of haven. Imagine a sprawling green oasis, a park rivalling the famed Vondelpark in size. Buiteneiland is set to become just that. This 45-hectare islet is being meticulously crafted, layer by layer, using recycled earth from other city projects. This circular approach to construction means the island’s creation will span approximately 20 years, a testament to sustainable urban development. Buiteneiland’s transformation into a natural sanctuary will be a gradual unveiling. As the land rises, it will reveal a diverse landscape. There will be areas dedicated to sports, inviting fields for recreation, and spaces for cultural expression. While primarily focused on nature and leisure, the possibility of up to 500 homes remains open, adding a touch of urban life to this natural haven. Buiteneiland’s north side, facing the brunt of the waves, will feature a rugged, stone-laden edge. In contrast, the south side will embrace a gentler touch, adorned with swaying reeds. This planned contrast in textures will create a dynamic and engaging environment for visitors to explore. The island is expected to be fully realized between 2045 and 2050.
