Picture this De Baarsjes Amsterdam a vibrant district brimming with life. Its story begins long ago in the 17th century. A humble hamlet emerged named De Baarsjes meaning The Little Perches. An inn called De Drie Baarsjes The Three Little Perches stood proudly on its eastern edge. This inn gave the area its charming name.

The real transformation of De Baarsjes happened in the 1920s. Amsterdam expanded westward. Architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage a visionary designed the impressive Mercatorplein. A tram line connected De Baarsjes to the city center. This spurred rapid development bringing commuters and residents alike.

This planned urban growth known as Plan West reshaped De Baarsjes. The Amsterdam School architectural style dominated. Buildings were made to last. Rows of sturdy homes and shops emerged. The distinctive Jan Maijens School and the Jerusalem Church are prime examples of this era’s architectural style. The Mercatorplein Complex with its houses and shops further reflects Berlage’s vision. Even a bridge Bridge 382 became a national heritage site.

De Baarsjes grew rapidly. The neighborhoods of Admiralenbuurt Chassébuurt Postjesbuurt and Trompbuurt formed. Each with its unique character. De Baarsjes became a borough in 1990. Later it merged with neighboring areas forming the larger Amsterdam-West borough.

Urban renewal in the 1990s preserved De Baarsjes’s character. Buildings were renovated not demolished. Problematic establishments were closed. Efforts were made to enhance safety and reduce crime. Today De Baarsjes remains a dynamic district. It is one of the most densely populated in Amsterdam. People from over 100 different nationalities call De Baarsjes home.
