Here stands Prometheus. Dedicated to fallen sportspeople. This is the Prometheus War memorial. It remembers those who perished during World War II.

Prometheus embodies the spirit of resistance. The artist Fred Carasso created this statue. Carasso himself fled fascism in the 1930s. He found friendship with members of the Dutch resistance.

Notice Prometheus holds a torch. This torch symbolizes defiance. Carasso saw the torch as the flame of resistance against oppression. The Olympic Games of 1928 in Amsterdam were the first to feature the Olympic flame.

Originally, planners wanted a plaque on the Marathon Tower. Instead, the Dutch Olympic Committee desired a sculpture. They wanted it visible from every point in the Olympic Stadium. The south tribune became the chosen spot. Fred Carasso collaborated with the Public Works Department. Architect Jan Wils also consulted on the project.

The Prometheus War memorial was unveiled on June 22, 1947. It was during the first Olympic Day after the war. Fifty thousand people attended. Mayor Arnold d’Ailly was present. Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard also attended. Bernhard, patron of the Dutch Olympic Committee, unveiled the statue. Athletes gave the Olympic salute during the Wilhelmus.

Later, the area around the Olympic Stadium was redesigned. The statue was moved near the Marathon Tower. Inside the stadium, it stood on a pillar. In 2000, it was placed on a pedestal outside.

Prometheus represents a powerful message. It serves as a tribute. It honors those who gave their lives. It stands as a beacon of hope. It reminds us of resilience. Consider its meaning and remember their sacrifices.
