Ever wondered about a coffeeshop named after a bird? De Watersnip in Amsterdam West is just that. Its name means Common Snipe a small European bird. This bird was famously featured on the old 100 Dutch Guilders banknote. The banknotes were called De Snip. They were taken out of circulation in 2002. You can still see a large mural of this banknote inside De Watersnip. There’s even a real taxidermied snipe on display.

De Watersnip isn’t your typical Amsterdam coffeeshop. It’s a takeaway-only establishment. This means you can’t linger inside. The coffeeshop is located in a residential area. It mostly attracts local customers not the usual tourist crowds found in the city center. De Watersnip offers a classic menu. It features traditional cannabis strains. You’ll also find import hashes and pre-rolled joints.

A unique feature of De Watersnip is its retail partnership with Amsterdam Genetics. They sell Spacetry cannabis-infused gourmet desserts. These treats are made by a Michelin star chef. That’s quite a sophisticated touch for a coffeeshop. Smoking isn’t allowed inside. However there is a designated area to enjoy a beverage before you leave.

De Watersnip’s story is a small slice of Amsterdam life. It combines the familiar image of a coffeeshop with an unexpected detail. Its name and the displayed artwork connect it to Dutch history and the now-defunct currency. It shows a blend of tradition and local character. This unique establishment reveals a different side of Amsterdam. It’s a side beyond the usual tourist hotspots. It’s a taste of genuine Amsterdam culture. So next time you’re in Amsterdam West don’t forget to visit De Watersnip. You might just discover your new favorite coffeeshop.
