“Ode” to a Bridge. Feel the cool Amsterdam air on your skin. Look at the Odebrug. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a three-part marvel connecting Oosterdokseiland to the Prins Hendrikkade.

The Odebrug isn’t just a passageway. It’s a testament to engineering. Construction began September 1 2009. Architect Simon Wilkinson faced unique challenges. The bridge needed to accommodate everyone. Pedestrians cyclists cars buses and even trucks needed passage.

But there’s more. Imagine the boats below. The Oosterdok’s boats needed ample space to turn. A wide waterway was essential. This meant a single bridge pier. The span became almost two meters thick. The massive girders were fabricated by Haitsma Beton. Sarens hoisted them into place. The northern span’s girders are 40 meters long weighing 120 tons. The southern ones are even bigger 45 meters and 130 tons.

The Odebrug officially opened June 23 2011. It replaced the Oosterdoksdam. That dam had served since the metro’s construction in the late 1970s. It was removed to make way for the Odebrug.

The name itself is a story. “ODE” stands for Oosterdokseiland. It’s also a poetic nod to the shape of an ode. And it’s a tribute to Simon Carmiggelt’s famous words. His quote “Amsterdam is a wonderful city to leave and to return to” adorns plaques on either side of the bridge. An ode to the city and to the bridge itself.

So next time you cross the Odebrug remember more than just crossing a street. You’re traversing history engineering and a little bit of poetry. You’re experiencing Amsterdam’s soul one bridge at a time.
