“Let me be myself” is not just a mural. It is a powerful statement. It embodies Anne Frank’s enduring legacy right here on the NDSM wharf.

This striking artwork is by the internationally renowned artist Eduardo Kobra. He is known for painting the world’s largest street art mural in Rio de Janeiro. This mural spans 240 square meters. Kobra used over 450 spray cans and 35 liters of lacquer paint to create it.

The Let me be myself Mural was created in 2016. The municipality of Amsterdam and Street Art Today commissioned Kobra to do it. In 2017, it was nominated for a Dutch Street Art Award in the Dutch Mural category.

Kobra worked for over a month to complete the Let me be myself Mural. It graces the facade of the old welding shed. This is the future home of the museum for urban contemporary and street art.

The mural presents a new portrait of Anne Frank to the city. The artwork resulted from a collaboration between Amsterdam and São Paulo. It followed a visit by Eberhard van der Laan to the Brazilian city. The artwork’s height required the use of aerial platforms for its creation.

Kobra explained his choice of Anne Frank. He said that her courage and wisdom inspire him and many others. Young people feel touched by her story. She advocated for peace and respect for the individual. That’s why he named his work “Let me be myself”. Kobra previously painted portraits of the Dalai Lama, John Lennon, and Nelson Mandela.

Close your eyes and feel the vibrant colors. Imagine the sheer scale of the mural. Envision Anne Frank’s face emerging from the kaleidoscopic patterns. Kobra’s kaleidoscopic technique adds depth. It portrays the complexity of Anne Frank’s personality and story.

“Let Me Be Myself” embodies Anne Frank’s longing for authenticity and freedom. Through Kobra’s portrayal, she represents the universal desire for unrestricted self-expression. It resonates across generations.

In May 2017, the artwork was defaced. Street Art Today launched a crowdfunding campaign. They hoped to raise enough money to restore the Let me be myself Mural.

Now, look closely. See how Kobra captures Anne Frank’s indomitable spirit. He portrays her as a symbol of courage. Her diary remains a poignant testament to humanity. It emphasizes empathy, tolerance, and the pursuit of peace.

Amidst the NDSM Wharf’s bustling energy, the Let me be myself Mural stands as a cultural beacon. It invites reflection on Anne Frank’s legacy. It reminds us of the timeless relevance of her message.

The Let me be myself Mural is a reminder of Anne Frank’s resilience. It urges us to echo her message. We should strive for understanding and compassion in our modern world.
