“Tineke Guilonardbrug” might not ring a bell for everyone but its story echoes with courage. This bridge stands in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. It is more than just a crossing over the Burgemeester van Tienhovengracht. It is a monument to a hero.

Let’s dive into the story of the Tineke Guilonardbrug. It was constructed in 1956 and 1957. The bridge was designed by Dick Slebos of the Dienst der Publieke Werken. Slebos drew inspiration from Piet Kramer. Kramer designed many bridges in Amsterdam. You can see the Amsterdam School style in its brick landheads. Notice the mix of horizontal and vertical brickwork. Also observe the contrast between brick and granite.

Interestingly, this bridge design dates back to a 1939 plan. Cornelis van Eesteren envisioned it for Slotermeer’s expansion. World War II delayed its construction for ten years. The Tineke Guilonardbrug originally bore the simple name of Brug 611. In 2016, Amsterdam sought names for its bridges from the public. J.C. Bloembrug was also suggested, but the city chose Tineke Guilonardbrug.

The name honors Tineke Guilonard, a member of the CS-6 resistance group during the war. Tineke endured arrest and survived multiple concentration camps. She was born Tineke Wibaut-Guilonard in 1922 and died in 1996. This area has many streets and bridges named after resistance heroes.

Take a closer look at the bridge’s features. Its concrete deck reflects modern building materials. The wrought iron railings have a simple design. 126 concrete piles support the entire structure. Not far from here is bridge 609 which has a strong resemblance to the Tineke Guilonardbrug.

Near the Tineke Guilonardbrug are benches. These benches offer a spot to sit. They allow you to look out over the water. You can also observe the bridge itself.

The bridge also features an information board. This board tells Tineke Guilonard’s life story. Amsterdam has a project called “Give Streets a Face”. It adds panels with portraits and biographies. This makes the streets more personal.

So the Tineke Guilonardbrug is more than just concrete and steel. It embodies the spirit of resistance. It also shows the enduring legacy of those who fought for freedom. As you cross this bridge take a moment to remember Tineke Guilonard’s courage.
