Hidden amongst the Amstel River, the A2 and A10 motorways lies Amstelglorie. Amstelglorie is a surprising green oasis in Amsterdam. It’s a place where nature thrives and community blossoms. Established in 1953, Amstelglorie began as a haven for those with a passion for gardening. Over time, it evolved into something much more. Today, Amstelglorie covers 21 hectares. Over half of this area is dedicated to the vibrant allotments, averaging 275 square meters each. The remaining area welcomes the public. Amstelglorie is part of Amsterdam’s main green structure. This makes it an important link in the city’s ecological network. Imagine strolling through the public gardens. You might spot one of the 40 bird species that call Amstelglorie home. Perhaps you’ll glimpse an owl, a pheasant, a crested tit, or even a kingfisher. Beyond birds, Amstelglorie teems with life. Dragonflies, butterflies, frogs, salamanders, mice, hares, and bats all contribute to this vibrant ecosystem. A patch of wild garlic adds a touch of magic to the woods. The 5.5 kilometers of ditches and canals teem with aquatic life. Amstelglorie offers more than just gardens. The public area, covering almost 9 hectares, boasts a play forest. It also features the Hemkerhof, an experimental natural garden. There’s also a guesthouse, a wetland area, a toad pond, two bee colonies, and a herb garden. A playing field provides recreation for all ages. The paths, canals, lawns, and ditches are meticulously maintained by the allotment gardeners themselves. During the gardening season, from mid-March to October, the public area is open from sunrise to sunset. In the winter months, from November to mid-March, the park closes at 5 pm. For those who enjoy a game of pétanque, Amstelglorie offers a well-maintained jeu de boules court located behind the playing field. It’s open until dusk every day except Friday evenings. Just remember to bring your own boules. So, next time you find yourself in Amsterdam, escape the urban hustle and discover Amstelglorie. It is a testament to the power of community and the beauty of nature, nestled in the heart of the city.
