Ever wondered why this bridge has such a peculiar name? This is the Aalmoezeniersbrug. It stands gracefully in Amsterdam-Centrum. The Aalmoezeniersbrug. It is not just a crossing. It’s a piece of Amsterdam’s history.

Let’s delve into the story of the Aalmoezeniersbrug. Its name connects to a former almshouse. That almshouse once stood on the Prinsengracht. The almshouse sheltered poor orphans and widows. It was known as the aalmoezeniershuis. This bridge carries the memory of that charitable institution.

Back in 1860, a different bridge stood here. Stadsarchitect Bastiaan de Greef designed that bridge. But as Amsterdam grew, so did its traffic. The Leidsestraat, including the bridges, became too narrow. Trams needed more space for stops.

Enter Piet Kramer. He designed the Aalmoezeniersbrug we see today. Kramer envisioned a plate bridge. It featured three passageways and abutments of brick and natural stone. The bridge’s flanks display an ornamental motif.

Funding the Aalmoezeniersbrug was quite the challenge. Initial estimates in 1916 totaled 150000 gulden for three bridges. World War I caused material costs to skyrocket. The budget nearly doubled by 1920/1921.

This increase allowed for embellishments. The Aalmoezeniersbrug received ornate wrought iron railings. Sculptor Hildo Krop added four granite sculptures of mythical creatures. These details elevate the bridge beyond mere functionality.

Since 2002, the Aalmoezeniersbrug has been a Rijksmonument. This designation recognizes its cultural significance. The city saved money by avoiding a planned infill of the Leidsegracht. The Leidsestraat became a pedestrian zone in the 1970s.

Observe the unusual traffic pattern on the Aalmoezeniersbrug. Due to the car-free Leidsestraat, traffic drives on the left. Trams however stick to the right. Cyclists navigate as they see fit. This creates a unique flow of movement.

These creatures can also be seen on bridges 29 and 43. The Aalmoezeniershuis was established in 1666. It provided care for widows and orphans. They were under the care of the almoners.

So, as you cross the Aalmoezeniersbrug, remember its past. Consider the orphans and widows who once benefited from the nearby almshouse. Think of Piet Kramer’s vision and Hildo Krop’s artistic contributions. The Aalmoezeniersbrug is more than just a structure. It’s a testament to Amsterdam’s history and its commitment to caring for its citizens.
