Remember those rose gardens from a bygone era? This is Rozenoord. Once a place of beauty and leisure, Rozenoord now carries a weightier significance. It serves as a poignant memorial to a dark chapter in Amsterdam’s history.

Rozenoord stands as a somber reminder of the atrocities committed during the Second World War. More than 100 Dutch civilians met their end here. They were unjustly executed by German occupation forces in the final months of the war.

The name Rozenoord itself offers a stark contrast to its tragic history. In the early 1900s, it was a rose garden. Later a teahouse adopted its name. These stood by the Amsteldijk.

Imagine this scene. It is between January 18 and April 14, 1945. The air is thick with fear. The sounds of gunfire shatter the silence at Rozenoord. Resistance fighters and ordinary citizens alike face their executioners.

Today, Rozenoord offers a place for reflection. The Fusilladeplaats Rozenoord is a war memorial. Every year on 4 May, people gather. They commemorate the victims of the Second World War. They remember the price of freedom.

The memorial features a plaque. It bears a simple, yet powerful inscription. It states that at this place, more than 100 Dutch people were shot dead by the German occupiers.

In 2014, Ram Katzir created another memorial. It is called Monument Rozenoord. It consists of empty chairs on concrete plates. Each plate bears the name of a victim. Some plates remain nameless. These represent the unknown victims of Rozenoord. In 2018, six more names of victims were discovered. Six extra chairs were added to Monument Rozenoord.

The original monument at Rozenoord was moved in 1981. This was due to the construction of a bridge over the Amstel. The new location lies slightly north.

Consider Cesar Willem Ittmann. He was a doctor and resistance fighter. He was executed at Rozenoord on 7 February 1945. In 1992, the path next to Fusilladeplaats Rozenoord was named after Ittmann.

Another victim was Cornelis Hendrikus de Groot. He was a topman at the illegal newspaper Het Parool. Each year in May, representatives lay a wreath. They commemorate their former colleague and the other victims.

Think about the interactive digital tribute. It honors stories of resistance. It remembers the lives behind empty chairs. The monument arranges empty chairs. This symbolizes lives abruptly interrupted. Visitors are invited to sit among the absent. This amplifies the sense of loss.

The interactive experience brings the symbolism to life. Players can explore the space. They uncover stories of those who resisted oppression. They can pay tribute to their courage. They leave a flower. The experience features a voice-over. It is inspired by a witness’s account. Original background music enhances the atmosphere.

Rozenoord serves as a place of remembrance. It invites us to reflect. It reminds us of the importance of standing up for freedom and justice. It urges us to never forget the sacrifices made by those who came before us.
