Curious about how land transforms over time? Welcome to the Nauernasche Polder. This area is a testament to the ever-changing landscape of the Netherlands.

The Nauernasche Polder is one of the IJpolders. These were created after 1872 along the North Sea Canal in North Holland. The Noorder IJdijk borders the polder on the northwest. Zijkanaal D forms the eastern border. It connects the Nauernasche Vaart to the North Sea Canal.

Until the late 20th century the Nauernasche Polder was mostly agricultural. But in the mid-1980s everything changed. The polder became a landfill site. An agreement called “Overeenkomst Nauerna” outlined plans for its transformation. It would become a 60-hectare nature and recreation park named Park Nauerna. Phase 1 was completed in 2015. Phase 2 followed in 2019. Phase 3 was finished in 2023. However, 15 hectares will still be used for waste processing.

The Nauernasche Polder has faced challenges. There were concerns about the safety of people using the park. In 2018, the Raad van State ordered Zaanstad to improve safety measures. After safety concerns and a leakage the park was closed in March 2019.

The parties involved are working together to ensure safe recreation. The RIVM conducted research. They published reports in November 2024. Based on the reports the parties chose an execution scenario. Phase 1 will be fitted with foil and phases 2 and 3 will get alternative provisions. Phase 1 is expected to be ready within 3 years. Phases 2 and 3 will be developed simultaneously. It is expected that it will open after 4 years.

The Nauernasche Polder is more than just a park. It is part of a larger story. Nauerna, a nearby hamlet, has a rich history. It dates back to the 16th century. The Nauernasche Vaart was created in 1630. In the 17th century, a new lock was built. Around this lock and an oil mill a community formed.

As compensation for delays there are sustainable developments for the hamlet. Part of the park will be used to realize a solar park. The goal is for the residents of Nauerna to be energy neutral.

The Nauernasche Polder is a symbol of transformation. It shows how land can be repurposed. From agriculture to landfill to park the Nauernasche Polder continues to evolve. It is a place where history and nature meet. It highlights community resilience.
