Across the Weespertrekvaart stands the Duivendrechtsebrug a testament to Amsterdam’s enduring connection to its surroundings. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s the latest in a long line of structures spanning this waterway since 1686 a crucial link between Amsterdam and Utrecht. Imagine the Kuipertjesbrug a simple wooden drawbridge named after a nearby cooperage. It stood here centuries ago its humble design a stark contrast to the modern concrete table bridge before us.

The Duivendrechtsebrug we see today isn’t the first either. A pivotal moment in its history arrived in 1925. A collision rendered the iron and wood bridge unusable. A temporary ferry service was established while a new bridge was constructed. That temporary ferry only lasted until November 22nd 1925 when the repaired bridge reopened. A new bridge was needed though and the old one had been on the list for a long time. That’s why the new underpass was commissioned. The new overpass arrived not long after.

The 1927 replacement a bascule bridge carried the weight of traffic between Amsterdam and Utrecht until 1954. Before the A2 highway opened this bridge was the only route between the two cities. Think about that all the private vehicles and public buses all funneled through this single point. It wasn’t just cars and buses. It’s been a crucial route for centuries. Even Napoleon crossed this very area in 1811 on his journey from Utrecht.

The intense traffic especially during rush hour is almost unimaginable. In the 1970s around 200 city and regional buses including the heavy bus route 55. This resulted in constant traffic jams. Even the surrounding roads were badly paved and contributed to accidents making it Amsterdam’s worst traffic black spot by 1975. The old bridge was simply incapable of handling this volume.

The current Duivendrechtsebrug a double table bridge opened in 1988. Its design reflects the changes in the surrounding road network. The Rozenburglaan was straightened a piece of land in Duivendrecht had to be expropriated. The new bridge is slightly east of its predecessors. This change was necessary to accommodate the nearby A10 highway. In 2017 extensive maintenance was completed on the bridge. The bridge keeper’s house now even partially serves as an overnight stay. The Duivendrechtsebrug though it is not much to look at quietly bears witness to centuries of history and development. It reflects Amsterdam’s growth its resilience and its enduring spirit.
