Crumbling walls whisper tales of a bygone era. This is Zwischenwerk IXb. Right here in Cologne’s Gremberger Wäldchen it stands. A relic of Germany’s past. A silent sentinel nestled between the modern thrum of the Autobahn and the rhythmic chug of railway lines.

Zwischenwerk IXb is one of Cologne’s fascinating Zwischenwerke. These were smaller fortifications. They played a crucial role in the city’s extensive late 19th-century defense system. This particular Zwischenwerk housed approximately 150 men. They were armed with four 9cm cannons. Imagine the sheer firepower.

The structure itself is impressive. Its walls boast a thickness ranging from one to 2.5 meters. The ceilings are a sturdy one meter thick. They were designed to withstand the destructive force of artillery. Notice the basalt stone walls. They are especially strong. They protected the vulnerable front entrance. Earth alone wasn’t sufficient protection. A layered construction of brick sand brick was impossible here due to space constraints.

Sadly vandalism has left its mark. The facade is marred by metal plates. These plates were initially intended to protect the Zwischenwerk. Sadly they didn’t deter intruders. The city ultimately decided to permanently seal the Zwischenwerk with concrete. It’s a bittersweet end to this mighty fort.

The outer moat’s contours are still faintly visible. Remnants of the brick walls endure. The railway line sadly swallowed a portion of the original grounds. On the roof the distant remnants of a concrete reinforcement are clearly visible.

Even though sealed Zwischenwerk IXb continues to fascinate. It stands as a testament to Cologne’s rich military history. It’s a reminder of a time when this quiet area saw a different kind of activity. A sobering reminder of the past. The Zwischenwerk is a powerful symbol of the city’s past. A piece of Cologne’s history waiting to be explored. Its story continues to unfold even now.
