How many stories do these walls hold? Today we are standing before the Lüttich-Kaserne in Cologne. This active Bundeswehr Kaserne houses the Bundesamt für das Personalmanagement der Bundeswehr. This translates to the Federal Office for Personnel Management of the Bundeswehr.

But the Lüttich-Kaserne has a history that stretches beyond its current role. Let’s step back in time.

In 1936 the area was designated for military use. From 1936 to 1939 the National Socialist Motor Corps used it. It served as a training ground. This was a Motorsports school for the NSKK.

After World War II the area transitioned. In 1951 the Belgian forces took over. They renamed it Knaeselaere Kaserne.

Several Belgian artillery units were stationed here. The 43rd Artillery was here from 1951 to 1961. The 17th Rijdende Artillerie was here from 1951 to 1956. Musique 7 Bde Inf also called the Lüttich-Kaserne home. They arrived in April 1956. Other units included the 1st AAOD and 3rd AACRD. The QG and Batterie QG 1 Groupement Antiaérien were also here.

After the Belgians moved out the Bundeswehr moved in.

In 1960 the Transportbataillon 933 was stationed here. It was renamed in 1962 to schweres Transportbataillon 933.

From 1967 to 1977 the Fernmeldeausbildungsverband 70 was stationed here. Later the Schule für Personal in integrierter Verwendung called the Lüttich-Kaserne home from 1977 to 2004.

The Stammdienststelle der Bundeswehr was here between 2006 and 2012. Also the Pionierausbildungskompanie 749 lived here from 1957 to 1970. The schweres Pionierbataillon 716 was here from 1961 to 1969.

Several medical units have been stationed here. From 2004 to 2015 the Sanitätszentrum Köln ASt Lüttich-Kaserne was located here. The Reservelazarettgruppe 7311 was also stationed here from 1973 to 2007.

Today the Lüttich-Kaserne houses the Bundesamt für das Personalmanagement der Bundeswehr. In 2018 a modern service building was constructed on the site. It provides space for 479 posts and a conference area. The design features a silver shimmering curtain facade. It presents a contemporary aesthetic.

The Lüttich-Kaserne stands as a testament to Cologne’s military history. It has transformed over the decades. From pre-war training grounds to a hub for personnel management. Its walls tell a story of constant change. It is a story of adaptation. The Lüttich-Kaserne continues to serve Germany today.
