A golden winged pug surveys the Rhine. That’s how many remember the Skulpturenpark Stammheim. This isn’t just any park. It’s a captivating blend of nature and art nestled in Cologne’s Stammheim district.

The Skulpturenpark Stammheim occupies the grounds of a former castle. Schloss Stammheim once stood proudly overlooking the Rhine. It was a grand structure. Its history stretches back to the late 1st millennium. A royal court existed in Stammheim. It was even mentioned in a 1083 document. This was when Archbishop Sigewin received gifts for the Cologne St Martin’s Monastery. The castle passed through many hands. Notable owners included the von Fürstenberg family. Their era ended with the death of Countess Eugenie in 1925. Tragically the castle was destroyed in 1944 during World War II. Only a few remnants remain.

The park itself was originally laid out in 1832. This was under the direction of Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe. Many trees are over 200 years old. They stand as silent witnesses to the park’s tumultuous past. The park is more than ancient trees. Since 2000 it has been home to a constantly evolving collection of contemporary sculptures. Some are permanent fixtures others change annually. The golden pug a whimsical creation arrived in 2004. It perches atop a pillar providing a unique vantage point.
