A ghost of a fortress. That’s what Zwischenwerk Ib is. It once stood proudly as part of Cologne’s outer defensive ring. Today, only subtle traces remain, whispers of its former strength. Zwischenwerk Ib, built in 1876-77, was one of 23 such structures designed to protect Cologne. It was a smaller Zwischenwerk, similar to an infantry stronghold. It lacked the typical Biehler-style fort features. Instead, its facade bristled with embrasures for defending the rear. Each small Zwischenwerk had a unique design. Zwischenwerk Ib was situated near the intersection of Neusser Straße and Militärring, along Bremerhavener Straße. The fortress world changed rapidly. By 1914, aerial photographs reveal the northern sector as highly vulnerable. Armoring efforts were underway at Zwischenwerk Ib, the first phase nearly complete. Yet, just a few years later, from April 14 to July 26, 1921, Zwischenwerk Ib was demolished. The land it occupied saw a new purpose. In 1926, the Glanzstoff-Courtaulds company established itself there. Today, you have to look closely to find any hint of Zwischenwerk Ib. Only slight mounds remain at the edge of the site. During its time, Zwischenwerk Ib housed both infantry and artillery. One unique feature was its relatively shallow ditch, around 4.5 meters deep. Its entrance doors, possibly narrowed during reinforcement efforts, bear witness to its evolving history. The arched window lintels stand out, a final architectural detail of this vanished fortress. Imagine standing here as soldiers hurried through these doorways. The sounds of their boots would have echoed in the narrow passage. Cannons would have been positioned, aimed toward the potential enemy. Zwischenwerk Ib, a sentinel now vanished. Its memory is kept alive in slight undulations in the ground, ghosts in the modern landscape.
