Zurich began as Turicum. Romans founded it over 2000 years ago. The name Turicum can be traced back to a tombstone from the 2nd century AD. It was a customs post. Goods were trafficked on the Limmat River. This point later became a vicus.
In 1218 Zurich gained Imperial immediacy. It became an Imperial free city. Zurich obtained a status comparable to statehood. The city built a wall enclosing 38 hectares in the 1230s. Stone houses on the Rennweg were also constructed.
Did you know that Zurich played a pivotal role in the Swiss Reformation? Huldrych Zwingli, a leading figure started it in 1519 at the Grossmünster. The Zurich Bible was printed in 1531 by Christoph Froschauer. This event caused many changes to state matters and civil life in Zurich.
During the 16th and 17th centuries, Zurich adopted an isolationist attitude. This led to the construction of a second ring of fortifications in 1624. These fortifications needed resources. Resources were taken from subject territories. Rebellions were crushed. Zurich proclaimed itself a republic in 1648.
In 1847 the first railway on Swiss territory connected Zurich with Baden. It was called the Spanisch-Brötli-Bahn. Zurich Hauptbahnhof became the origin of the Swiss rail network. Bahnhofstrasse was laid out in 1867. The Zurich Stock Exchange was founded in 1877.
Zurich has a fascinating story about its expansion. In 1893 twelve outlying districts were incorporated. Aussersihl was one of them. Additional land was reclaimed from Lake Zurich. In 1934 eight additional districts in the north and west were also added.
Have you noticed that Zurich is a city of water? It sits at the northwestern tip of Lake Zurich. The Limmat River flows from the lake. The Sihl River meets the Limmat near the Swiss National Museum.
