The clean lines and simple elegance of the Bauhaus movement are all around us here in Tel Aviv. And yet, nothing embodies this style more than the ‘Boat House’. Built in 1934, this building is a testament to the visionary architects who shaped Tel Aviv’s iconic skyline.
Standing on the corner of Levanda and HaMasger streets, it was envisioned as a community hub for artists and intellectuals. It’s a six-storey structure with a flat roof, all painted with vibrant blue and white colours.
It was so named for its unique curved shape, which resembles an upside-down boat. That curved shape is the signature of the Bauhaus architectural design. Today, it’s home to apartments and offices, but if you look closely, you can still see the ghosts of the artists who once called it home. They were inspired by the sea and the open sky, and they used their art to create a sense of community and belonging. The Boat House is a reminder that even in the midst of a bustling city, there is always room for creativity and inspiration.
