Did a lion once roam these streets? We stand before Zum Roten Löwen, “The Red Lion Inn,” in Vienna’s vibrant Rossau district. Zum Roten Löwen isn’t just a name. It’s a thread woven into the fabric of this neighborhood. The name itself dates back to 1785, a testament to the inn’s enduring presence. Officially, the street we’re on, Rotenlöwengasse, took its name from the inn in 1862. Imagine the clatter of horse-drawn carriages, the murmur of conversations spilling from the inn’s windows.

Zum Roten Löwen has seen Vienna evolve. Today, it’s been lovingly restored by Alexander Reissner. He took over in 2019. Reissner is not just the owner, but the head chef. He trained at the Radisson-SAS Hotel’s Le Siecle. He found his passion for Viennese cuisine at the Pfarrwirt in Grinzing. He later honed his skills at Sven’s Sohn on Berggasse. Now, at Zum Roten Löwen, he brings that same passion to every dish. His partner, Ivett Temesvari, supports him with Hungarian flair.

Zum Roten Löwen embraces regional and seasonal ingredients. The menu features Wiener Schnitzel and other Austrian classics. You’ll find international influences woven throughout the dishes. Freshness and quality are paramount. The wine list is exclusively Austrian, showcasing the country’s diverse wine regions. Imagine savoring a glass of Grüner Veltliner or a rich Zweigelt alongside a plate of freshly prepared schnitzel. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting. It’s the perfect setting for a romantic dinner or a casual meal with friends. Zum Roten Löwen is more than a restaurant. It’s a place where culinary art meets heartwarming hospitality. A place where you can experience the true essence of Viennese charm.
