What if I told you that ZooTampa at Lowry Park wasn’t always filled with the roar of lions and the chatter of monkeys? It actually started its life with a much humbler beginning. Let me paint a picture for you. Imagine standing right here in the 1930s. Instead of the impressive habitats you see today, you’d find yourself at Plant Park on the University of Tampa grounds, home to a modest collection of local creatures like raccoons and alligators. An aviary housed a few exotic birds, adding a splash of color to the scene. This was Tampa’s first foray into the world of zoos, a far cry from the award-winning ZooTampa at Lowry Park we know and love today. Now, fast forward with me to 1957. The City of Tampa, under the leadership of Mayor Nick Nuccio, decided to give these animals a more spacious home. That’s when they made the move to Lowry Park. The park was already a popular spot, named after a former city commissioner. This is where the story of ZooTampa at Lowry Park truly begins. But the transformation wasn’t instant. Throughout the 1970s, the zoo continued to grow. The need for better habitats and more natural settings for the animals became clear. The Tampa community, recognizing the potential of their zoo, came together to transform it into the world-class institution it is today. A dedicated organization was formed. And in 1988, after a massive renovation, ZooTampa at Lowry Park was reborn. It boasted new areas like a free-flight aviary, an Asian Domain, a Primate World, and a charming Children’s Village with a petting zoo. ZooTampa at Lowry Park has gone from strength to strength, winning awards and accolades along the way. But at its heart, it remains dedicated to providing incredible experiences and promoting wildlife conservation.
