Zonnekus meaning ‘sunny coast’ in Dutch. It was the first house built on Woodbridge Island in 1929. Sir David Graaff a prominent figure commissioned the construction. He envisioned a high-class private residence. A stunning showcase of his confidence in Milnerton’s potential. The cost a staggering £10 000. Architects Walgate and Elsworth created a masterpiece. Builders H. Wier & Co brought their vision to life.

The grand entrance. A porte-cochère sheltered visitors. Above a sun balcony with sliding windows offered breathtaking views. The interior was equally impressive. A wide vaulted corridor led to the drawing room dining room library and cloakroom. The dining room and drawing room both L-shaped opened to a multi-vaulted loggia. This faced an octagonal garden. The staircase a unique feature. Handmade tiles formed the steps. Wrought iron balusters added an elegant touch.

Upstairs three bedroom suites awaited. Each with its own bathroom. There was even a day and night nursery. The main suite’s bathroom opened directly to the large sun balcony. Beyond the main residence lay a vast servants’ wing. This included a separate staircase a basement with central heating. A fine servants’ dining hall connected to the double garage. Chauffeurs’ quarters were above the garage. A fully equipped laundry completed the extensive complex. The house even had a saltwater supply for sea baths. Heated electrically for year-round comfort.

Sir David Graaff and his family enjoyed Zonnekus until his death in 1931. It then became the residence of the British High Commissioner Sir Herbert Stanley.
