“Why are there two names on this stele?”. The Żołnierzom AK i NSZ Stele commemorates a complex and often tragic period in Polish history. The stele honors the soldiers of both the Armia Krajowa (AK), the Home Army, and the Narodowe Siły Zbrojne (NSZ), the National Armed Forces. Both groups fought valiantly against the Nazi occupation during World War II. They participated in the Warsaw Uprising, a desperate yet heroic attempt to liberate the city from German control. The uprising, planned as a swift operation, tragically lasted 63 days before being brutally suppressed. The Germans, under Himmler’s orders, retaliated with unimaginable cruelty. They massacred civilians, leaving the city in ruins. The Żołnierzom AK i NSZ Stele stands as a testament to the sacrifice and courage of these soldiers who fought for a free Poland, despite overwhelming odds.
