Imagine the Warsaw Housing Co-operative. In the early 1920s it built its first colonies. These simple block buildings had affordable apartments for the working class. Students of architecture still study these buildings today. Architects aimed to create ideal living spaces. They focused on sunlight, green spaces and essential infrastructure. Kindergardens, schools, theaters, and cinemas were all included.

Later family housing developments attracted Polish Intelligentsia. Żoliborz Dziennikarski emerged as a hub of avant-garde design. Explore the streets of Promyka, Tucholska and Dziennikarska. You will see the unique modernist architecture.

Kazimierz Tołłoczko designed homes here from 1928 to 1930. These were for the Warsaw Journalists Housing Cooperative. Row houses still stand on Promyka, Tucholska, and Dziennikarska streets. They feature small windows facing the street. Utility rooms faced the street. Normal sized windows faced small gardens.

Melchior Wańkowicz once lived in a villa at Dziennikarska 3. Maria Anto had a painting studio on Karpińskiego street. Zuzanna Janin even dedicated sculptures to her family home’s history.

The neighborhood features small green streets. Gardens border the Vistula River. Żoliborz Dziennikarski along with Żoliborz Urzędniczy started developing in the 1920s. It was a continuation of Żoliborz Oficerski.

Although war disrupted the pre-war landscape, much was lost. However Żoliborz Dziennikarski remains a green area. It is full of trees, parks and gardens.

Today a garbage shed stands where Melchior Wańkowicz’s villa once stood. A large apartment block similar to the Superjednostka in Katowice sits on Promyka street. It happened because Edward Gierek laid pavement on Krasińskiego street.
