Is it just a coincidence? This square’s name, Žižkovo náměstí, echoes a warrior, Jan Žižka. He led the Hussite forces, a revolutionary movement that shook the very foundations of power in the 15th century. Right here, in the heart of Prague, Žižkovo náměstí stands as a testament to a city that has constantly reinvented itself. This square, however, wasn’t always named after the Hussite commander. Imagine, back in 1904, its birth marked by a different name: Kollárovo náměstí. It honored Ján Kollár, a Slovak poet who championed Slavic unity. But history, like a river, changes its course. The square was renamed Chelčického náměstí, paying homage to Petr Chelčický, a key figure in the Czech Reformation. It was not until 1958 that it finally assumed the name it bears today: Žižkovo náměstí. Take a moment to appreciate the grand building that dominates the eastern side. The College of Applied Arts and High School of Applied Arts, a testament to the city’s artistic spirit, resides there. Remember, every corner of Prague whispers stories. Žižkovo náměstí is no exception. It’s a tapestry woven with threads of art, history, and the unyielding spirit of Prague.
