Isn’t it curious how a simple touch can hold so much hope? Here, on the Charles Bridge, stands the gleaming statue of Svatý Jan Nepomucký, a figure shrouded in legend and bathed in the golden light of wishes. Now, Nepomucký was no ordinary priest. He served as the confessor to Queen Sophia, wife of the fiery King Wenceslas IV. Bound by the sanctity of the confessional, Nepomucký refused to divulge the queen’s secrets to the king, even under threat of torture. Enraged, the king ordered Nepomucký to be thrown into the Vltava River from this very bridge. Legend has it that as the priest’s body met the water, five stars miraculously appeared above the spot, marking him as a martyr for the sanctity of confession. Today, people from all over the world come to touch the statue of Svatý Jan Nepomucký, believing it brings good luck and ensures a safe return to Prague.
