Dare to imagine a church established by freed slaves. Zion Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and resilience. Its story began in Southwest Washington D.C.
Zion Baptist Church was formally established September 12 1864. Twelve churches in the District of Columbia authorized its creation. Seven loyal baptized believers founded Zion. They were Rev George Jackson Isaac Johnson John Shippen Susan Thompson Ann Walker Rev William Walker and Lettia Williams Richardson. Nine others were baptized by Rev William Walker.
These founders named their church Zion Baptist Church. This name honored their journey. They had traveled from Fredericksburg Virginia and its surroundings to Southwest Washington D.C. This migration represented their freedom and hope.
Initially Zion met in Simpson’s Feed Store purchased in 1867. This building became Zion’s first church. The congregation affectionately called it the Southwest Church. They worshipped there until 1956. In 1956 Zion temporarily worshipped at the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA.
In 1962 Zion erected a beautiful church in Northwest D.C. The church continued to grow. In 2020 Zion merged with New Creation Church. Now Zion exists in three locations. These are Zion Main Campus Zion North Campus and Zion Virtual Campus.
Nine pastors have led Zion Baptist Church. They guided its spiritual growth. These pastors include Rev William Walker and Rev William Gibbons. Also Rev William J Howard Rev William Washington Rev Dr John M Ellison Rev Dr A Joseph Edwards Rev Carlton W Veazey Rev Dr Emil M Thomas and Rev Dr Keith William Byrd Sr. Currently Rev Dr Keith William Byrd Sr serves as the ninth pastor.
Since its beginning Zion Baptist Church has focused on discipleship. It has also emphasized evangelism. This is achieved through Christian education. Community engagement outreach and education from nursery school to post-graduate studies are also important. Missions social justice and Baptist convention involvement further support these goals.
Over the years Zion has grown in membership and ministries. It has increased its community impact. Zion strives to serve this present age. It uses the strength of its past. It looks forward with the hopes of the future. Zion maintains its focus on discipleship and evangelism.
Zion Community Enterprise is another important part of Zion’s ministry. It was incorporated in November 2015. It is the community-based development arm of Zion Baptist Church. Its mission is to promote healthy communities. It supports families in crisis in the Washington Metropolitan Area.
The motto of Zion Community Enterprise is Healthy Families Make Healthy Communities. It encourages and empowers families. This is achieved through training advocacy and crisis intervention. Temporary housing and community engagement programming are also offered.
Zion Baptist Church owns three properties. These include the Main Campus and a Family Life Center in Ward Four of Washington D.C. A North Campus is located in Wheaton Maryland.
Zion Community Enterprise envisions repurposing the Family Life Center. The goal is to create affordable safe and quality housing for seniors. Rev Dr Keith W Byrd Sr believes seniors should live in the communities they helped build.
Zion Baptist Church through its ministries and community engagement continues to be a beacon of hope. It offers support and affordable housing. It embodies its motto Healthy Families Make Healthy Communities.
