Seven faithful believers founded Zion Baptist Church on September 12 1864. They were Rev George Jackson Isaac Johnson John Shippen Susan Thompson Ann Walker Rev William Walker and Lettia Williams Richardson. Nine others joined them. This group established Zion Baptist Church. It commemorated their journey from Fredericksburg Virginia to Southwest Washington DC.
Initially Zion Baptist Church used Simpson’s Feed Store as its first building. The congregation rebuilt the edifice. They worshipped there affectionately calling it the Southwest Church until 1956. For a short time they used the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA. Finally in 1962 they erected their current beautiful church in Northwest DC. This shows remarkable perseverance and dedication.
Zion Baptist Church hasn’t stood still. It merged with New Creation Church in 2020. Now it’s one church with three locations. There’s the main campus a north campus and a virtual campus. This innovative approach embraces modern technology. It ensures inclusivity for a wider community.
Nine pastors have guided Zion’s spiritual growth. Rev William Walker was the first. Rev Dr Keith William Byrd Sr is the current ninth pastor. Each pastor contributed to the church’s evolution and growth. Their leadership ensured the church’s continued success.
Zion Baptist Church’s commitment to discipleship and evangelism is unwavering. It offers Christian education community engagement and outreach. It provides education from nursery school to postgraduate studies. It’s involved in missions social justice and Baptist conventions. The church’s wide-ranging activities benefit the community and its members.
