The Zgrupowanie AK Ruczaj Plaque commemorates the soldiers of the Ruczaj group. This group fought valiantly in the Warsaw Uprising. Their fight was part of a larger struggle for Polish freedom. Their legacy lives on through this plaque.
The Ruczaj group’s history is long and complex. It began in November 1939. Józef Suliński formed the Independent Poland combat organization. Years later in July 1944 Captain Czesław Grudziński took command. He renamed the group Ruczaj. Their assigned task during the uprising was impossible. They were to secure German police areas. This proved impossible. Many soldiers suffered immense casualties. The group was later reorganized into a battalion.
The Ruczaj battalion fought fiercely. Their battles took place across various Warsaw streets. These included Koszykowa Mokotowska Chopin Pius XI and Marszałkowska streets. They even battled in the Swiss Valley near Chopin Street. The fighting was so intense a double ceasefire was needed. This allowed both sides to collect their fallen. This battalion of roughly 1500 soldiers suffered terribly. Over 250 were killed. Over 500 were wounded.
One of their notable achievements was the capture of the SS and Police headquarters. This building at Aleje Ujazdowskie 23 was known as Kutschera’s bunker. They also seized the Little PASTA telephone exchange. This was on August 23rd.
The plaque itself is a testament to resilience. It was designed by Helena Dmochowska also known as Dick. She was a sharpshooter in the Ruczaj group. The plaque was unveiled on May 28th 1993. It stands as a symbol of remembrance and respect.
