From its humble beginnings in Passau in 1981 the collection expanded greatly. The Zentrum’s story is one of growth and preservation.
Initially founded by Werner Traxel within the Institute for the History of Modern Psychology at the University of Passau the collection steadily grew. Historical documents apparatus and a series of publications on the history of psychology formed its core. Horst Gundlach significantly expanded the collection from 1990 onwards. He also organized exhibitions and congresses furthering its reach and impact.
A pivotal moment arrived in 2006. Agreements between the Free State of Bavaria and universities led to the relocation of the collection to Würzburg. This move aimed to consolidate the strengths of various university locations. In 2009 the collection found a new home. This was a historic university building at Pleicherwall 1. For a year Horst Gundlach and Armin Stock jointly led the Zentrum. After Gundlach’s retirement Armin Stock took sole leadership.
Since its opening in Würzburg the Zentrum has hosted numerous symposia conferences and congresses. Five exhibitions showcased the collection’s depth and breadth. These ranged from early experimental psychology to the work of giants like Hermann von Helmholtz and Carl Stumpf. A donation of Stumpf’s estate significantly enriched the collection. The Zentrum even presented a virtual exhibition in 2021 celebrating the 125th anniversary of the University of Würzburg’s Institute of Psychology.
